I was looking for a good warm-up/method book to use in a high school orchestra setting for my next teaching methods project, found this book, and wanted to use it to show you all how there’s definitely no bias towards band in music education.
No…  definitely not.

There needs to be a rage comic about when you’re playing in an orchestra concert, and the person in front of you moves directly in your line of sight to the conductor.

And you can’t move to see at all, unless you want to completely take all of your stand partner’s playing space.

And then they turn around and say “Sorry, I can’t see.”

Well, I’m glad YOU can see, since you’re the most important person in the world!!!!

During yesterday’s orchestra rehearsal, our conductor was telling us about what each part represents in Smetana’s The Moldau.  It starts with the winds representing two springs flowing together into the river.  The cellos, violas, and 2nd violins represent the rushing water, and the first violins are floating on top with the melody, like they’re floating down the river.

So, I say, “First violins are on a BOAT!!!!”

If you don’t understand why that’s funny (how can you not?!), I feel sorry for you, but I’ll help you out…

Oh, my God-I love Lenny! He was always so open. He was-how do you say?-not dressed. Of course, he was wearing his tuxedo and his tie and these things-of course-but when he got up to conduct in front of people, his soul was naked. He was showing you who he was, he was giving everything. Everything.

The other piece we’re reading in rehearsal tomorrow.

There’s no need to post the title or composer.

Herbert von Karajan conducting Die Moldau from Má vlast by Smetana.

We’re reading this in orchestra rehearsal tomorrow.

Apparently our conductor won’t be there.

Is it pretty freakin’ lame for our first rehearsal to be with a graduate assistant instead of our actual conductor?

Dudamel is taking over the L.A. Philharmonic in a few weeks.  I can hardly wait!

reblogging this pic cuz i just found out that Gustavo is featured in this month’s issue of Vogue!  I’ve given up on Vogue a long time ago but I’ll shell out the 5 bucks this time around for him.  can’t wait till he takes the podium over at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.  he is an utter delight.
ETA: here’s a link to the 60 Minutes interview.  Good stuff.

Important:

(First off, I want to point out that school is raping my tumblarity.)

Which is better:  the original Appalachian Spring (written for a 13 member chamber orchestra), or the orchestral suite?

US premiere of Mahler’s 8th Symphony (“symphony of a thousand”), Philadelphia Orchestra/Stokowski 1916.

I was extremely fortunate to see this performed a few years back by the Boston Symphony.  It’s expensive to stage, even with only four hundred or so performers on stage.
(I wonder if I have a photo of my own lying around somewhere…)

Looking at this picture always amazes me.
